special invocations and prayers are required for pilgrimage
proper and visitation
('Umra)
. The pilgrim is free to choose his
invocations.
2. Circling the Ka'ba on foot or carried on a litter (in case of
being unable to walk) seven times. This is known as the arrival
circling. This circling has to be preceded by the ablution and
followed by praying two rak'as at the place of Ibrahim (
maqam
Ibrahim) which is close to Ka'ba.
3. Running
(sa'y)
(on foot or carried on a litter) seven times
between Safa and Marwa.
4. Standing at
'Arafat
at the sunset of the ninth day of the month
of
Dhul-Hijja
in order to combine between a part of the day of
the ninth with a part of the night of the tenth of the same month.
5. Following the setting of the sun on the ninth day of
Dhul-Hijja
the pilgrims begin to proceed from
'Arafat
to
Mina
through
Muzdallafa
from which the pilgrim gathers, if in a hurry, forty-
nine casting stones and, if not, seventy. At
Muzdallafa
the
pilgrims stop at
al-Mash'ar
al-Haram
for invocations and to
perform the Early Morning prayer.
6. When the pilgrim arrives at Mina, he throws seven of the
casting stones at the first
jamra
known as
Jamrat al-'Aqaba
while saying 'Allah is Great' at the throwing of each stone. This
takes place following the sunrise of the tenth of
Dhul-Hijja
. The
pilgrim then and following the noon of the eleventh day of the
same month throws twenty-one stones, seven at each of the three
Jamrat.
This act of throwing stones is repeated of the afternoon
of the twelfth of the month. And the pilgrim who is not in a hurry
does this for the third time on the thirteenth day. The three
