They marvel that a warner has come to them from amongst
themselves. The unbelievers say: ‘This is an enchanter telling lies.
Has hemade the gods one God? This is indeed strange.'
Their leaders go about (saying): 'Go and firmly adhere to your
gods. This is a thing designed. We never heard of this in the former
faith. It is nothing but a false invention. Was the word of Allah
revealed to himalone among us?’
Surely they are in doubt about My warning. (And) certainly they
have not yet tastedMy punishment.
Or have they the treasures of the mercy of your Lord, the Mighty,
the Munificent One? Is theirs the sovereignty of the heavens and the
earth and all that lies between them? Then let them climb up to the sky
by ropes!
(Nothing but) a defeated host of factions is there. The people of
Nuh, Aad and Pharaoh of the stakes, Thamoud, the people of Lut and
the dwellers of the Forest-such were the Confederates. Not one of
them but did deny the apostles. But (My) punishment justly (overtook
them).
Yet these only wait for a single shout which cannot be retarded.
They say: ‘Our Lord, hasten to us our fate before the Day of
Reckoning.'
Bear with what they say. And remember Our servant Dawud the
mighty. He was ever turning in repentance. We made the mountains
join with him in praise evening and morning, and the birds, too, in all
their flocks; all were obedient to him. We made his kingdom strong
