Has the story of the two litigants, who entered his chamber by
climbing over the wall, reach you? When they went in to Dawud and
saw that he was alarmed, they said: 'Have no fear.We are two litigants,
one of whom has wronged the other. Judge rightly between us and do
not be unjust; guide us to the right path.
'My brother here has ninety-nine ewes, but I have only one ewe.
He demanded that I should entrust it to him and got the better of me in
the dispute.'
Dawud replied: 'He has certainly wronged you in seeking to add
your ewe to his flock. Many partners are unjust to one another; but not
so those who have faith and do goodworks, and they are few indeed.'
Dawud realized that We had tested him. He sought forgiveness of
his Lord and fell down penitently on his knees. We forgave him his
sin, and he shall be honoured by Us and shall have an excellent return
(toUs).
(We said): 'Dawud, We have made you a vicegerent in the land.
Rule with justice among men and do not yield to lust, lest it should
turn you away from Allah's path. Those that stray from Allah's path
shall be sternly punished, because they forget the Day of Reckoning.'
It was not in vain that We created the heavens and the earth and all
that lies between them. That is the fancy of the unbelievers. But woe to
the unbelievers because of the fire of Hell!
Are We to treat alike those that have faith and do good works, and
those that corrupt the earth with wickedness? Are We to treat the
