THE QURAN
The expiation for invalidating the fast on account of sickness or
other accidental reasons is to fast later one day for each of the
days in which the fast is invalidated.
Purification by means of washing (ghusl) is not a prerequisite for
valid fasting.
Menses and childbirth render women's fasting unacceptable.
They have to make up for the missed fasting days by fasting
them later.
Those who invalidate their fast by sexual intercourse between
dawn and sunset have to undertake both feeding the poor
(kaffara) and fasting later two consecutive months. Should they
be unable to fast for two months, then they have instead to feed
sixty poor people.
9. Additional Fasting
The best time for the additional (or
sunna
) fast is on the ninth
and tenth of
Muharram,
during the six consecutive days from the
second to the seventh of
Shawwal
and on the ninth of
Dhu al-
Hijja
for those who are not on pilgrimage and standing on Arafat.
Additional
(sunna)
fasting is also on the twenty-seventh of
Rajab
, the fifteenth of
Sha'aban
and three days of every month in
the Muslim Calendar.
