THE QURAN
The Muslims have also to pay an Alms-tax on breaking the fast.
It is due on the person and on each member of his family who is
alive at sunset on the last day of the fasting month (Ramadan). It
amounts to about three kilos of wheat, maize or rice or its equal
value per every member. It is also given before sunset on the last
day of the same month.
7. Charity
(Sadaqa)
Allah urges every Muslim to spend of his wealth in His way and
for the public good both publicly and privately and without
limitation. Whatever the Muslim gives as charity is repaid by
God many times ranging from ten to seven hundred. This is in
accordance with the following (Quranic) injunction: “The
example of those who spend in the way of Allah is as a grain
growing seven ears, in every ear a hundred grains. And Allah
multiplies (further) for whom He pleases. And Allah is Ample-
giving. Knowing.”
8. Fasting
God enjoins fasting during the month of Ramadan on all mature
and able Muslims. It is performed by first expressing the
intention to do so, and then by abstaining from food, drink and
other things which spoil the fast from the break of dawn until
sunset.
The expiation for invalidating the fast on account of permanent
inability to fast is feeding a poor person by proving him with a
meal or what equals it in value.
