THE QURAN
PREFACE
The present English version of the meaning of the Quran is the
end product of extensive efforts by a number of scholars. It
cannot claim, however, to do full justice to the original revealed
text.
We have aimed, in this version, at the most accurate and readable
rendering of the meaning of the Quran into the English language,
and have in the process made use of the existing English
translations, as well as the major Arabic commentaries.
We would like, however, to express our gratitude to both the
Supreme Sunni Council and the Supreme Shii Council of
Lebanon for their great encouragement and cooperation. Both
most kindly charged their scholars not only to express opinion on
the manuscript of the present version, but also to check all its
contents.
We wish also to thank Dr. Umar Farroukh, Professor of Islamic
philosophy at the Islamic Maqasid schools and member of the
Islamic Research Association of Bombay and Iraqi Scientific
Association, Dr. Majid Fakhri, Professor of philosophy at the
American University of Beirut and Mr. Ali Aqil of the Supreme
Shii Council for their help in checking the entire text, and for
making valuable remarks and suggestions.
Any shortcomings or deficiencies, however, are our
responsibility.
