THE QURAN
In the Name of Allah,
The Compassionate, the Merciful
This translation of the meaning of the noble Quran is not just
another translation. It meets a pressing and long felt need among
non- Arabic speaking Muslims, and non-Muslims as well, for an
English translation rendered as accurately as possible into
modern English and approved by Muslim religious authorities.
It was to meet this need that Dar Al-Choura charged Dr.
Mahmud Zayid of the American University of Beirut with the
checking and revising of the Penguin Classics translation by N.J.
Dawood. Dr. Zayid did this with the assistance of a committee of
scholars among whom were professors Umar Farrukh, Majid
Fakhri and Mr. Ali Aqil. On completion of the work, the
resulting version was submitted for approval to both the Supreme
Muslim Sunni and Shii Councils in the Republic of Lebanon.
Approval was secured and documented in the introductory pages.
It is hoped that the reader will find this translation both enjoyable
and useful.
