With a hollow sound. “This,”they said, “is your god and the god of
Musa but whomMusa has forgotten.” '
Did they not see that it returned them no word (answer), and that it
could neither help nor harm them?
Harun had said to them: 'My people, this is but a test for you. Your
Lord is the Merciful. Followme and obey my command.' But they had
replied: 'We will worship it until Musa returns.'
Musa said to Harun: 'Why did you not follow me when you saw
themgoing astray?Why did you disobeyme? '
'Son of mymother,' he replied, 'Do not seize my beard nor the hair of
my head. I was afraid that you might say: “You have sown discord
among the Children of Israel and did not wait for my orders.” '
OSamiri,' criedMusa, 'what had come over you? '
He replied: 'I sawwhat they did not see. Took a handful of dust from
the trail of the Messenger and flung it away: thus did my soul prompt
me.'
'Begone! '(cried Musa). 'Your lot in this life is to say: “Touch me
not.” Nor shall you escape (in the life to come) your appointed doom.
Behold this idol which you have served with such devotion; we will
burn it to cinders and scatter its ashes over the sea.'
Your God is Allah, besides whom there is no other god. He has
knowledge of all things.
Thus We recount to you the history of past events. A Message of
Our own We have given you: those that reject it shall bear a heavy
burden on the Day of Resurrection. They shall bear it for ever: an evil
