splendour and riches in this life, so that they may lead (people) astray
from your path. Lord, destroy their riches and harden their hearts, so
that they shall not believe until they face their woeful punishment.'
Allah said: 'Your prayer is heard. Follow the right path and do not
walk in the footsteps of ignorant men.'
We led the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his
legions pursued them with wickedness and tyranny. But as he was
drowning he cried: 'Now I believe that there is no god save the God in
whom the Children of Israel believe. ToHim I give upmyself.'
(Allah said): 'Now (you believe)! But before this you disobeyed andwere
a wrongdoer. We shall save you in your body this day, so that you may
become a sign to all posterity: for most men give no heed toOur signs.'
We settled the Children of Israel in a blessed land and provided them
with good things. Nor did they disagree (among themselves) until
knowledge was given them. Your Lord will judge their differences on
the Day of Resurrection.
If you are in doubt of what We have revealed to you, ask those who
have read the Book before you. The truth has come to you from your
Lord: therefore do not be one of the doubters. Nor shall you deny the
revelations ofAllah, for then you shall be lost.
Those concerning whom the word of your Lord will be fulfilled will
not have faith, even if every sign comes to them, until they see their
woeful punishment. Had this been otherwise, then if a nation had
believed, it would have profited from its faith. But it was so only with
Yunus's people. When they believed, We spared them the penalty of
