saying: 'Allah bids you rejoice in the birth of Yahya, who shall confirm
the Word of Allah. He shall be princely and chaste, a prophet and a
righteous man.'
'Lord,' said Zakariyya, 'how shall I have a son when I am now
overtaken by old age andmywife is barren?'
'Such is the will ofAllah,’He replied. 'He does what He pleases.'
'Lord,' said he, 'vouchsafeme a sign.'
'For three days and three nights,' He replied, 'You shall not speak to
any man except by signs. Remember your Lord always; give glory to
Himmorning and evening.'
And (remember) when the angels said to Mariam: 'Allah has chosen
you. He has made you pure and exalted you above all women. Mariam,
be obedient to your Lord; bow down and worship with the
worshippers.'
This is an account of what is hidden.We reveal it to you. You were not
present when they cast their pens (to see) which of them should have
charge ofMariam; nor were you present when they argued about her.
The angels said to Mariam: 'Allah bids you rejoice in a Word from
Him. His name is al-Masih, Isa the son of Mariam. He shall be noble in
this world and in the next, and shall be favoured by Allah. He shall
speak tomen in his cradle and in the prime of manhood, and shall lead a
righteous life.'
'Lord,' she said, 'how can I bear a childwhen noman has touchedme?'
He replied: 'Such is the will ofAllah. He creates whom he will. When
He decrees a thing, He need only say: “Be,” and it is. He will instruct
