one another: 'No beggar shall set fool in it today.'
Thus they went out, fixed in their resolve. But when they saw it they
cried: 'We have beenwrong.We are utterly ruined.'
Themost upright among themSaid: 'Did I not bid you praiseAllah?'
'Glory to our Lord,' they answered. 'We have assuredly done wrong.'
And they began to blame one another.
'Woe to us! ' they cried. 'We have been great transgressors. We hope
our Lordwill give us a better orchard in its place. To our Lordwe turn.'
Such was their punishment. But the punishment of the life to come is
more terrible, if they but knew it.
Surely the righteous have gardens of bliss with their Lord,AreWe to
deal with the true believers asWe deal with the wrongdoers?What has
come over you? Howdo you judge?
Have you a scripture in which you learn that you will have whatever
you choose? Or have We sworn a covenant with you-a covenant
binding till the Day of Resurrection-that you shall have what you
yourselves demand.Ask if any of themwill vouch for that!
Or have they associate-gods? Let them produce these gods, if what
they say be true!
On the day when the dread event takes place and they are bidden to
prostrate themselves, they will not be able. They shall have their eyes
cast down and shall be utterly humbled; for they were already bidden
to prostrate themselves when theywere safe.
Therefore leave to Me those that deny this revelation. We will lead
them step by step (to their ruin) in ways beyond their knowledge. I
