third (goddess) Manat? Is He to have daughters and you sons? This is
indeed an unfair division!
They are but names which you invented, you and your fathers:
Allah has sent down no authority for them. They follow vain
conjectures and the whims of their own souls, although the guidance of
their Lord has come to them.
Is man to attain all that he desires? For to Allah belongs the
Hereafter and the present life.
Numerous are the angels in the heavens; yet their intercession shall
avail nothing untilAllah gives leave towhomHe accepts and chooses.
Those who disbelieve in the life to come call the angels by the
names of females. Yet of this they have no knowledge: they follow
mere conjecture, and conjecture avails nothing against truth.
Give no heed, then, to those who ignore Our warning and seek only
the life of this world. This is the sum of their knowledge. Your Lord
knows best who has strayed fromHis path, andwho is rightly guided.
To God is what the heavens and the earth contain. He will requite
the evil—doers according to their deeds, and bestow a good reward on
those who do goodworks.
(To) those who avoid the grossest sins and indecencies and commit
only small offences, Allah is of vast forgiveness. He knew you well
when He created you from earth and when you were embryos in your
mothers' wombs. Do not pretend to purity; He knows best those who
guard themselves against evil.
