being ever reluctant to assist you.When fear overtakes them they look
to you for help, their eyes rolling as though they were on the point of
death. But once they are out of danger they assail you with their sharp
tongues, covetously demanding part of the booty. Such men have no
faith. Allah will bring their deeds to nothing. That is no difficult thing
forAllah.
They think the Confederates have not withdrawn. Indeed, if the
Confederates should come again they would sooner be in the desert
among the wandering Arabs asking news of you; but were they with
you, theywould take but little part in the fighting.
You have a good example inAllah'sApostle for anyone who looks
toAllah and the Last Day and remembersAllah always.
When the true believers saw the Confederates they said: 'This is
what Allah and His Apostle have promised us; surely their promise
has come true.'And this only increased their faith and submission.
Among the believers there are men who have been true to their
covenant with God. Some have died, and others await their end,
yielding to no change, so that Allah may reward the truthful for their
truthfulness and sternly punish the hypocrites—or show them mercy
if He will:Allah is Forgiving andMerciful.
Allah turned back the unbelievers in their rage, and they gained no
advantage. He spared the faithful (the stress of) war: Mighty is Allah,
andAll—powerful.
He brought down from their strongholds those who had supported
them from among the People of the Book and cast terror into their
