af ha ya ain sad. A recital of your Lord's mercy to his servant
Zakariyya:
He invoked his Lord in secret, saying: 'My bones
are
enfeebled, and my head glows silver with age. Yet never, Lord, have I
prayed toYou in vain. I now fear my kinsmen who will succeed me, for
my wife is barren. Grant me a son who will be my heir and an heir to the
house of Yaqub, andwhowill find grace inYour sight.’
'Rejoice, Zakarriyya,' came the answer. 'You shall be given a son,
and he shall be calledYahya; a name noman has borne before him.'
'How shall I have a son, Lord,' asked Zakariyya, 'when my wife is
barren, and I amwell advanced in years? ‘
He replied: ‘Such is the will of your Lord. It shall be no difficult task
forMe, for I brought you into beingwhen youwere nothing before.’
'Lord,' (said Zakariyya), 'giveme a sign.’
'Your sign is that for three days and three nights,' He replied, 'you
shall be bereft of speech, though otherwise sound in body.'
Then (Zakariyya) came out from the Shrine and told themby signs to
give glory to their Lordmorning and evening.
(We said): 'O Yahya, hold fast to the Book.' We bestowed on him
wisdom while yet a child and (gave him) pity (for others) and purity;
