short weight or measure. I see you are prosperous. And I fear for you
the punishment of an all-compassing day.
'My people, give just weight and measure in all fairness. Do not
defraud others of their possessions and do not corrupt the land with
evil. What remains with Allah is better for you, if you are true
believers. I amno guardian over you.'
'Shu'ayb,' they replied, 'did your prayers teach you that we should
renounce the gods of our fathers and that we ought not to conduct our
affairs in the manner we pleased? Truly, you are the wise and gracious
man! '
He said: 'Think, my people! If I have a clear proof frommy Lord and
He has bestowed on me good provision, (should I seek the unlawful)? I
do not want to oppose you in that which I forbid you. I seek only to
reform as much as I can, and my success is with none butAllah. In Him
I have put my trust and toHim I turn.
'And, my people, let your disagreement with me not bring upon you
the doom which overtook the people of Nuh, Hud, and Saleh; nor is it
long since the tribe of Lut was punished. Seek forgiveness of your Lord
and turn toHim in repentance. My Lord isMerciful, Loving.'
They said: 'O Shu'ayb, we do not understand much of what you say to
us. And we see you weak among us. But for your tribe, we would have
stoned you.You are not dear to us.'
He said: 'Have you more consideration for my tribe than for Allah?
Dare you turn your backs upon Him? My Lord has knowledge of all
your actions. Do what you will, my people, and so will I. You shall
